Scenario – your friends just moved into a new house with their kids. They invite you over. What do you bring!? Usually a bottle of wine works right? Maybe a piece of art? A nice candle? But what about the kids?
Oooh…I know! BOOKS!! Books make fabulous housewarming gifts for families. If it’s their first home, you’re helping them build their library. If it’s their fifth home, they appreciate the small footprint that books have. Plus, kids love being included in gifts!
Moving can create a lot of emotions in a family, especially for the children. It can be exciting, but also daunting! They’ll have a new home in a potentially new area, they’ll have to make new friends, create new safe spaces. You can help the transition by giving the perfect gift! (Yes, over here, books are always the perfect gift).
Hmm or maybe you’re a realtor looking to create a lasting connection with a family you just helped buy or sell their home? Look no further than books for their kids!
Why books make great gifts:
- They don’t take up much space
- Affordable
- Books don’t require batteries
- Create family memories around them
- Help with emotional situations
- Re-readable
- You can write an inscription
Books I recommend as Housewarming Gifts for Families:
All of the books I’m including below can be found on my Housewarming Gifts wish list on my website. Find it here.
Where Happiness Lives (Hardback) $15.99 – This book holds such a soft spot for me. The illustrations are gooorgeous, with paper flaps and cut-outs. The text is rhyming and fun to read but the message is even better. In this story, a young mouse keeps yearning for a “better house” (realtors, sound familiar!?) but in the end discovers that true happiness belongs to those who love what they have and have what they need. This is my top suggestion if you’re looking for a housewarming gift for families!!
Happiness Mouse (Plush toy) $12.99 – And, if you get the above, pairing it with this lovey is so sweet! This is a plush toy of the lead character in Where Happiness Lives. Perfect gift combo!
Home, Sweet Home (Hardback) $12.99 – This book features different houses and homes from all around the world. I love books that help us connect to the world around us, and not just our small neighborhood! This picture book features what makes a house a home and what a home looks like in different cultures around the world. Highly recommended for ages 5 and up. The illustrations are beautiful and the questions within the text cleverly engage young listeners.
Build Me a Home (Hardback) $11.99 – This whimsical picture book is bursting with creativity. Each spread begins with “Build me a…” setting a lovely daydreaming tone. For example, “Build me a library with a roof made of glass, we’ll read lots of stories and watch stars shooting past.” Not only is this book engaging, but it makes for a nice jumping off point for pretend play.
Very First Book of Things to Spot at Home (Board Book) $11.99 – If the housewarming gift is for a family of young children, you cannot go wrong with this board book!! It’s brightly illustrated and a fantastic vocabulary booster. The parents will be so glad you thought of their baby/toddler with this one!
Across the USA Activity Book (Paperback) $14.99 – If your recipient is making a cross-country move with older kids, this is the perfect going away gift!! Great for 6+ (or younger if they can already read). It features lots of USA themed activities. Plus, it includes stickers and a removable USA map!
